Anxiety and Depression

Helping You Smile and Laugh Again

We help people who are struggling with their mental and emotional health. We think of anxiety and depression like any other symptom: your body is communicating to you that something isn’t right. Our mental/emotional state is determined by the ongoing dance between our brain’s biochemistry and the things, people, and places that make up our environment. This is made up of positive and negative or traumatic things, people, and places.

Addressing The Terrain.

We will look at your physiology and brain chemistry. This may involve some testing to tease out whether you may have trouble making or metabolising neurotransmitters like serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine. We may also look at genetic polymorphisms, hormones, and possible toxic exposures that can manifest in the mood and brain. We then seek to identify and address the nutrient building blocks required for neurotransmitter synthesis.

When it starts showing up in the body.

Sometimes these types of problems manifest as other symptoms in the body like abdominal pain, headaches, nausea, a feeling of a lump in the throat, fatigue, or light-headedness, among others. You may have been worked up by a medical professional for some of these but no medically identifiable cause is found.

We find that these are sometimes connected to or initiated by traumatic events and experiences in your life. The feelings of depression and anxiety are connected to the feelings elsewhere in the body described above. We seek to identify and address the patterns that we usually establish subconsciously in response to overwhelming or traumatic events.

Addressing the Experiences and Traumas.

Our approach is via mind/body sessions in the office where we use the simple process of breathing to calm the mind, shift you from fight/flight/freeze (sympathetic state) to your rest/digest/heal (parasympathetic state).

When in the parasympathetic state we may explore or discuss the triggers and experiences that habitually pull you back to the fight/flight/freeze states of sadness, anxiety, paralysis, etc. Just as no two people are exactly the same. Some respond well to the physiologic approach, others to the mind body, and still others both.
